Leather Liberty Style Footstool

A magnificent antique Liberty style leather rhino footstool…

This is a wonderful example of a leather footstool shaped as a rhinoceros. Made of leather patches which have been stretched & stuck to a frame.

Dated circa 1900, this piece has aged beautifully giving a rich, deep brown patination.

With a wooden horn & brown glass eyes, this impressive leather footstool lends an air of gravitas & fun to any interior.

There is evidence of a previous repair to the leather ears, but otherwise he is in great vintage condition with sturdy legs & a solid body.

Although often described as ‘Liberty Stools’, this piece is not stamped & is constructed differently to the Omersa leather animals which are still sold by the famous London retailer today.

Early pieces predating Omersa, were often unstamped, although it is impossible to tell for sure if this rhino was originally sold by Liberty or not.

That said, it is a lovely & highly sought after piece.

This beastly mammal measures approximately 95cm in length from snout to tail.  34cm broad across the shoulders & an impressive 50cm high from floor to the shoulder- ample room for resting your feet in front of the fire.
