Who doesn’t love a surly faced chap…
Popular in Victorian times, the art of overpainting, saw mainly Victorian ladies, layer paint over photographs as a genteel pastime.
This image of an unknown gentleman, has been overpainted to give an extra dimension, bringing the photograph to life.
I love that the reverse has the artists fingerprints still visible, along with an inscription on the sepia board.
Who were these people? We shall probably never know, but I love the character they bring to a room.
In great vintage condition with some wear to the corners.
The picture measures approximately 22cm high x 17cm wide.
